Fish Hoek is the most sizeable community of the destinations we feature on the Cape Peninsula, being a long established coastal town of about 4000 households on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula about 40 minutes’ drive from central Cape Town. It is a popular base for holiday makers to explore the beautiful southern peninsula with the Cape of Good Hope a further 40 minutes’ drive away.
Fish Hoek itself has plenty of leisure activities on and off the ocean to keep even the most active visitor happy, from sea angling to kayaking, from whale watching trips, hiking and visits to the famous penguin colony just beyond nearby Simonstown. There are also some great dining and shopping spots including the small fishing village of Kalk Bay, a short drive along the coast from Fish Hoek.
Fish Hoek has a long sandy beach which is very popular with holiday makers and locals alike, especially with the ocean here on average 5 degrees
Kalk Bay is an absolute gem of a small fishing village on the False Bay coast of the Cape Peninsula, located just beyond Fish Hoek and about 45 minutes drive south of Cape Town. One of the smallest working harbours in South Africa, there is a real buzz as the small colourful fleet of fishing boats offloads its daily catch and fish are sold right off the boats on the simple harbour stalls as they have been for generations, closely watched by hungry harbour seals waiting hopefully for free handouts.
Kalk Bay is of course therefore a great choice for lovers of seafood with a wide range of restaurants along the water’s edge catering for all tastes from simple plates of fish and chips at the ever popular Brass Bell tavern right on the rocks, to the fabulous fine dining experience of the Harbour House restaurant, one of our personal favourites for seafood, with tables overlooking the sea and harbour area.
Kalk Bay also has a fascinating range of antique shops and quirky craft stores to browse along its one main thoroughfare, which along with many busy local cafes, cool bars and simple bistros create a very laid back, bohemian atmosphere that adds a lot to its charm.
