Cape Town rewards travellers who slow down, and there are two Capes worth slowing down for. There is the coast – Camps Bay, Bakoven, the Atlantic Seaboard – where the day begins with ocean light and ends with the sun dropping into the sea. And there is the Winelands, an hour inland, where mornings are still, vines run towards the mountains, and lunch quietly becomes the afternoon.
You do not have to choose between them. A split stay, a few nights by the ocean and a few nights among the vineyards, is how many of our guests build their Cape Town and Winelands itinerary. Done well, it feels like two holidays in one. Done badly, you lose a morning to packing and traffic. Here is how to plan the first and avoid the second.
Two holidays in one trip
Cape Town and the Winelands sit close enough to combine and differ enough to justify both. The coast gives you beaches, restaurants and a mountain at your back. The Winelands give you space, quiet and some of the best food and wine in the country. Change the scenery halfway through and the trip feels longer. Stay in one place and you will always wonder about the other.
Coast first, or vineyards first?
There is no wrong order, but there is a better one for most people.
Start on the coast if you want the city, the beach and the restaurants while your energy is high. Land, settle in, let the Atlantic set the rhythm. Then move inland to slow down.
Start in the Winelands if the flight is long and all you want is to sleep, eat and drink well. The quiet resets you. Finish on the coast, where the last days are easy and close to the airport.
A simple rule: coast first for energy, vineyards first for recovery.
The Atlantic Seaboard: where to base yourself
Camps Bay is the classic. The beach, the palm-lined strip, the restaurants within walking distance. Villas here tend to be large, with pools and terraces angled at the sunset. The Summit at Camps Bay sleeps twelve across six bedrooms, with a fire pit, a BBQ and views that run from Lion’s Head to the ocean. Numa Villa is a five-bedroom home in the heart of the village, with an open-plan living room, a garden pool and a gas fireplace for cooler evenings.
Bakoven, a quiet cove just along the coast, suits guests who want privacy without giving up the restaurants. Sunset Azure Villa is a seven-bedroom house spread across three levels, with two pools and a rooftop that catches the last light. Clifton, below it, keeps the calmest water and the whitest sand.
The Winelands: Delaire Graff Estate
An hour from the coast, Delaire Graff Estate sits on the slopes above Stellenbosch, with vineyards, gardens and Mountains on the horizon. The lodges here are made for a slower stay. Presidential Lodge 1 has two en-suite bedrooms, a log fireplace and a twelve-metre heated pool facing the valley. Presidential Lodge 2 offers the same privacy with views towards Simonsberg Peak. Garden Lodge is smaller and quieter, one bedroom under ancient oaks, with original art on the walls and a private terrace.
Breakfast comes with the rate. So does the minibar, the laundry, and a concierge who knows the estate. Days fill easily: wine tasting, a spa afternoon, lunch overlooking the vines.
How many nights in each?
Three and three is the simplest split, and it works for a one-week trip. Four on the coast and two inland suits travellers who want more beach time. Two on the coast and four inland suits those who came for the food and wine. For ten days or more, add a night to each and leave one free for a day trip – Cape Point, or the drive over Chapman’s Peak.
Getting between them without losing a morning
The drive from Camps Bay to Stellenbosch takes about an hour outside peak traffic. Leave mid-morning, after breakfast and before check-out, and you arrive in time for lunch in the vines. Pack the night before. Ask us to move your luggage and you travel with nothing but a coffee. The worst version of this trip is a midday check-out and a midday arrival – two half-days lost to a one-hour road.
