In anticipation of our glorious summer months, we’ve rounded up some hot spots to enjoy a fabulous Capetonian sundowner or two. This has been no easy list mind you, being spoilt for choice when it comes to spots with a view but it’s enough to get you started.

In anticipation of our glorious summer months, we’ve rounded up some hot spots to enjoy a fabulous Capetonian sundowner or two. This has been no easy list mind you, being spoilt for choice when it comes to sundowner spots with a view but it’s enough to get you started.

CHAPMAN’S PEAK DRIVE

Along this 9km stretch of windy mountainous road, there are several gorgeous viewing points to stop off and enjoy the breath-taking scenery. One such spot would be our ideal choice in enjoying a classy sundowner with panoramic coastline views stretching all the way from Hout Bay to Noordhoek. Be sure to take along a blanket and a picnic basket to truly make the most of it. Bear in mind that there is a toll that you will have to pay each way but know that it is fully worth it. If you’d prefer a more classic experience, the Champan’s Peak Hotel at the Hout Bay base of the drive offers a lovely terrace overlooking the Hout Bay Beach, harbour and Atlantic Ocean and offers a range of libations to suit all tastes.

V&A WATERFRONT SUNSET CHAMPAGNE CRUISE

Let’s be honest. It probably doesn’t get much better than Cape Town, champagne and a cruise. We like the idea of enjoying a sundowner in several spots instead of just being tied down to one location and Cape Town is the perfect place to enjoy the sunset from the ocean. Waterfront Charters offers sunset cruises on luxurious catamarans that take you out of the harbour and along the coast, choosing to follow the wind for direction on each trip. Typically, the cruise takes you out of the harbour towards the Milnerton Lighthouse and Granger Bay where you enjoy a relaxing sunset before heading back to the harbour.

If you’re looking for a more unique, kid-friendly option, the Waterfront also offers sunset cruises on their resident Pirate Boat, the “Jolly Roger”, which also includes a complimentary welcome drink upon boarding. Ahoy Matey!

SHIMMY BEACH CLUB

best sundowner spots

Just around the corner from the V&A Waterfront cruises is this hip and happening outdoor restaurant that offers a vibey spot to enjoy a drink or two as the sun goes down. The Ibiza-inspired Shimmy Lounge has its own 13meter bar with cocktails and a private deck which leads out onto their manmade beach. For a more refined drinking experience, you can enjoy the privacy of the Jameson Whiskey Bar which provides an exclusive space for more sophisticated sipping. Whatever your preference, it’s definitely the place to be on a warm summer’s evening.

TWELVE APOSTLES HOTEL

The Leopard Lounge at the esteemed Twelve Apostles Hotel, located in Camps Bay, is an absolute must for watching the sun dip below the sea horizon. With the iconic Twelve Apostles mountain range behind and the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean in front, it’s a 360 degree view of pure natural beauty. Sip your cocktail while taking in the views and perhaps extend your visit to include a delicious dinner at their top-class restaurant. As it’s a local and tourist hot-spot, we recommend booking in advance, just in case.

CAFÉ CAPRICE, CAMPS BAY

Camps Bay is the place to see and be seen and is thus the perfect place for socialites to enjoy a couple sundowners at the ever-popular Café Caprice. Situated along the Camps Bay strip of restaurants, one can enjoy spectacular views of the ocean and palm trees set against a multi-coloured sunset. This one is definitely a choice for those who love the buzzing energy of the street as their sidewalk tables provide instant atmosphere.

HARBOUR HOUSE, KALK BAY

This Hamptons-style eatery overlooking Kalk Bay’s active fishing harbour offers exciting seaside dining and drinking. Be prepared to spot an array of sea life while sipping on your Chardonnay as seals and whales are a common occurrence. This seaside restaurant is the perfect setting to enjoy a famous Cape Town sunset as you enjoy some local oysters and sparkling wine or champagne.
